Tour kicks off

Titanic

The French & Saunders: Still Alive tour kicked off on the date that plays hard-to-get, 29th February, in Blackpool.

Touring continues into May at venues around the UK. London dates are still a possibility - after French and Saunders have tested reactions round the country.

Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders have said this will be their last tour of its kind as they call time on their sketch shows in favour of other projects together.

Andrea:

What about US dates guys!?! Come to NYC! (You can crash at my house if you want. I have a futon and one of those air mattresses that a tiger and climb on. I've never tried it out with an actual tiger, but it looked pretty authentic in the commercial...)

COME TO THE US!!!

Sue in Leeds:

Saw your opening night show on Friday in Blackpool - yet again thought you were both fantastic. Travelled from Leeds and every mile was worth it. Saw you first time around at Leeds Grand Theatre and was sad that you missed us out this time, still really glad I made the trip to your opening night - could easily come and see you again and again. I'm sorry it's the end of the road for live shows, but look forward to all new ventures! Thank you!!

Jeanie McAlpine:

..."and one date in New York City"...

Pretty pretty please. If you book it, they will come.

kris:

Saw the show in Blackpool, Winter Gardens Theatre. It was absolutely fabulous (no pun intended). I was completely star struck when they walked on stage. I'm very sad that this is their final tour.
Praise the comedy goddesses!

Pete Smith:

As an anniversary treat i took my partner Mandy accross to Blackpool from Leeds for the opening night of the tour, I have to say we were both left
very dissapointed, The laughs were in short supply in fact at times we thought the whole thing was embarrasing. We went there to see a LIVE show displaying the onstage talents of 2 very fine actors/performers, instead we were treated to huge chunks of video!!!...total waste of money in our opinion. On our way out we could hear other people saying just what we were thinking, we were not alone then.

Tracy:

I have heard random snippets that you might play in Belfast at some point, is this true? Please add some sort of date for any location on the island of Ireland! please!

Ruth:

Together with a friend and my brother I went friday 29th feb for the weekend from the Netherlands via Liverpool to Blackpool to go to the show on saturday (we combined it with some beatles related things in Liverpool for my brother).
My friend liked the show a lot but for me and my brother most sketches were not new since we saw almost everything of their work so that was a little disappointing. The funniest part was when a lady in the audience was laughing hysterical and the audience responded to that and Jennifer and Dawn too. I can't repeat what they said because it was funnier than I can tell, although it was not so funny for this hysterical laughing lady...
The show was a bit short and the break for us unnecessary (but maybe required for F&S) and I was a little depressed afterwards because it was probably the last time I saw them live together on stage.
My friend and brother didn't want to wait to see if we could meet F&S afterwards at the theatre (stage door or theatre bar). That was a pity, because I had some very nice meetings in the past with actrice Kristin Scott Thomas at theaters so I hoped for something like that with F&S. But maybe they don't do those things...anyway I will never know...
But I was happy that there was some merchandise for sale and even more surprised that this guy (who sold the merchandise to me) knew many places in the Netherlands (not many english people would know that).
Greetings from the Netherlands,
Ruth

Kathleen Hegarty:

Hey, i saw you at the palace theatre in manchester on March 5th. The show was amazing!! Really enjoyed it. I met you afterwards outside and you were kind enough to let me take my picture with you, couldnt have had a better night! Thankyou for being so lovely.
Kat Leeds xxxxx

Lisa keenan:

I'm really excited as me and my mate Kim are coming to the City Hall Newcastle to see you tonite! I'm not gonna let any of these comments put me off as we've been huge fans of yours for the past 20 years and it's gonna be a privilege to see you perform live one last time!! Dawn we are up in the balcony but there's a huge toblerone in it for you if you come up for a photo lol xx

JIm & Denise Taylor:

Hey Dawn & Jennifer,

Saw your Newcastle show last night, and we're still laughing today. We disagree with some of the previous comments about the video - we thought they were great and the perfect fill in between your sketches. We came to see you in the late eighties and you were just as funny last night - worth every penny. Sad to hear you won't be performing live again, but we'll always be huge fans! Thanks for a great night. Jim & Den Taylor

Cara Barker:

Coming to LA, pretty please? Oh how we love you. You are del-l-l-l-l-icious.

Alan:

Went to the opening night in Edinburgh at the Edinburgh Playhouse. My stomach is still sore from laughing!!! Especially the Madonna scene and the homage to AB FAB LOL

Even got the programme signed and a pic with Dawn - they seemed so lovely and down to earth

Hope everyone else going to see it enjoys it!!!

Linda:

I went to see the show in Edinburgh and laughed my cocking ass off!!!!! ha ha They were fantastic, loved the ab fab part and all the old sketches. Comedy legends, gutted that this was the last tour. Long live French and Saunders !!!!

Sascha:

PLEASE come to the states!!! :)

Lisa Keenan:

Saw you both on Thursday night at the Newcastle City Hall and you were absolutely fabulous (pardon the pun!). My friend almost did a wee on her seat when Jen informed the judge that "I got worms from dog s##t!!". Personally I loved every second of it and Catherine Zeta Jones Spartacus will never seem the same again! Im so glad we got to see one last time. Long live French and Saunders!!

Lizzie:

London London London!! (or at least Fairfield Halls...?!)

emilylime:

Come to Canada!

Iain Condie:

Seeing you tomorrow night in glasgow, cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lorna J:

I saw you both in Edinburgh on Saturday night and you were feckin hilarious!! I didn't stop laughing out loud from start to finish, and my sides and head were sore by the time we came out.

I was there in a party of 8 and we all thought it was hysterical. The banter about who was most successful was a right laugh.

I nearly wet my pants at the Madonna sketch and the 2 dirty old men at the end were the icing on the cake (quite literally)!

What a hoot, it's a pity it's the last tour - BRILLIANT!

Pete from Boston:

200 quid return flight from East Midlands Airport to Edinburgh on 14th March 2008.

240 quid for two nights in Hotel in Edinburgh.

57 quid for Taxi to and from Playhouse Theatre.

40 quid for ticket in stalls.

8 quid for Tour Programme.

That French & Saunders Live Experience . . . Priceless!!!

I can't remember the last time I went to see a show and laughed from start to finish like I did last Friday. I left the show aching from laughter. The best money I have ever spent. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Ladys Dawn & Jennifer give your public what we want . . . more French & Saunders.

Richard:

I have been a massive fan for nearly 20 years and have seen you live a few times. This had to be the best live show yet. I laughed (hard) and had a little tear at the end.
I was at the Newcastle show on the 12th, if i had the money i'd be at every show.
"Thank you for the music" and all the laughs.
Good luck to you both, love ya's x x x

Hannah Chub:

trisha falvey:

We are really looking forward to the show on the 2nd in Plymouth - though reading the man from Boston's budget made me nervous. If I knew how much a quid was we would probably need to cancel...
Take care until the 2nd. We can't wait!
Trisha & Stephanie St Paul, MN
PS the animal cops sketch is your best I think!

Christina Bebeau:

I speak for French and Saunders fans across America...

BRING FRENCH AND SAUNDERS TO NEW YORK!

Victoria Haigh:

18th March Glasgow
What a show! You where brilliant. I've waited a long, long time to see you both and it was well worth the wait. To see the Original Ab Fab sketch live was just amazing. And the final sketch had the WHOLE of the venue is hysterics, genius! Thank you Jennifer & Dawn.

Ali Rankin:

I went to your Live show on Glasgow last night and I have to say that I have never been sooooo disapppointed!! Too much video to fill the change of costume gaps, not original enough and just not funny. As previously commented, it was simply embarrassing to watch..slighly embarrassing to think of the money I have spent to take my mum with me for the night!!!
Enjoy your retirement

Karina Fitzgerald:

Glasgow 19th March.
Hi Girls,
Just returned from your show tonight. Even the technical difficulties couldn't ruin it! I took my friend Virginia to your show as a treat for her 55th birthday - so it had to be special. It was!!!! We laughed out loud and loved all the different sketches. The "rivalry" between the big 2 shows was hysterical.
Thank you for coming to Glasgow (and staying for a marvellous second night!) And thank you for making us laugh all through the years!!
Slainte!
Karina Fitzgerald and Virginia Robertson.

cindy:

I will post another plea for shows in the US- you are both so fantastic. I was lucky enough to see Dawn in A Midsummer's NIght Dream in London years ago- would love to see Jennifer on stage as well. I loved abfab- can't get your other shows here- but thank goodness for home video.
Please come. I live in Chicago- which is a great city, especially in the summer . . . but will travel if I must
Yazoo is coming here in July- make my summer complete- come to america, too!!!

jillian:

hiii

I saw you guys 6/03 in Manchester!! we drove all the way from brussels to see you and it was defenitely worth the roadtrip!!!!
Even the strike from Seafrance couldn't get us out of the jolly good!! (BIG BASTARDS!!!) :-D

ANNYYYYWAAY we sat front row and I barely escaped from Dawns camera heading for my clevage ;-)

but I really laughed my eye out (dutch saying)!!!

and I even did my famous 'hail to the comedy godess bow' at the end... and I don't do that very often -lol

so thank you for a memorable night !!!

ste:

Don't know what show the guy above me went to, but I went to see F&S last night and I was in hysterics all the way through. And so was EVERYBODY sitting around me.

Thank you for the laughter F&S!!

Tracy D:

Went to see show last night in Sunderland, absolutely FANTASTIC!!!!!!! Been huge fans since the beginning have waited so long to see live show, brilliant soooooooo funny! our cheeks were achin with laughter, thank you so much for a brilliant night, and autographs, in awe!!! Worth every penny, please come back!! Excellent!!!
Love Tracy & Gillian

Nicky Souter:

Glasgow audiences used to destroy second rate performances at the Glasgow Empire.

You destroyed this one with poor technical support, weak gags and taking the p*** with so much video.

What a disappointment. Where was the standup comedy?

Canada, USA you really want these "pastits" to stay in England.

susan lowden:

HI F & S
just back from aberdeen show thought you were great .laugh a minute . so sad to see it finish .
good luck in all you do .
susan and graeme x x x x

laura crockford:

Thought you were both absolutely amazing!!!!!! went to the palace theatre in manchester on the 6th march! there werent any posters for sale though but i did manage to craftily steal one off the wall from the foyer! am going to see your show again in cardiff next month and i cant wait! il be the one in the front row holding as much chocolate as i can carry! gutted this is your last tour but fingers crossed you'll change your mind in the future!! good luck in all future projects - im sure they'll all be fantastic! x

Anonymous:

oh and as for that comment above by Nicky Souter - he/she obviously doesnt appreciate your work or probably even understand it. theres always one isnt there. x

lowri:

^ Laura (assuming the anon comment is by you too) you sound like a nutjob. F&S must be scared of that kind of lunatic fan. Not that they'd be reading your message anyway...

Carole Hogan:

Just watched your show in Aberdeen last night and it was probably good but couldn't hear a lot because of my teeth chattering!!!!! Here's why:

We attended the French & Saunders show expecting a comfortable, warm and welcoming environment. This just did not happen. The suitability of the venue for this kind of show was terrible. We endured 3 and a half hours in freezing temperatures with no sign of any type of heating in the building. Draughts from both sides of the arena made spectators extremely cold. We had to keep our jackets and gloves on throughout the show. With teeth chattering it was hard to enjoy the show and in fact we couldn't wait to go to get warm. The only reason we stayed is because it was an Easter treat for our son who is a big fan of French & Saunders. The only warm part of the building was the hot water taps in the ladies toilets. I was disappointed that people were taking photographs throughout the show with no intervention from staff to prevent this. This was annoying to those people sitting behind the picture takers as it obscured ther view. Surely some sort of photo opportunity could have been arranged to prevent this happening? People should be forewarned about the building when booking tickets so they can prepare themselves for the show. For the price of the tickets surely some heating would not have gone amiss? We will certainly think twice about going back to this particular venue, highly regarded or not!

Take your fans into consideration when choosing venues!

Ginette Thomas:

Firstly, Pete Smith and Nicky Souter - a prerequisite for the ability to appreciate good comedy is to ACTUALLY HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOUR. You were both obviously a waste of good seats!
The show was very funny indeed - infact, as well as programme and merchandise stalls, a Tena Lady stand would have been in order (now there's a merchandising opening - 'French & Saunders' maximum absorbtion pads).
Good comedy never dies - so, whilst French and Saunders may be quiet for a while, I along with countless others await a 'very loud cocking noise' heralding their return ;-)

Helen:

I went to see the show in Aberdeen on Friday and thought it was fantastic!! As a previous person has said, it was freezing in the venue but once F&S were on the stage I was laughing too much to care.

I was pleased to see many old favourites - Cassie Broadway was an unexpected gem, and Dot and May were as great as always. Also, Dawn's Catherine Zeta-Jones was fabulous and I thought that Jennifer's Madonna was very clever.

I especially enjoyed the scene with the 'showdown' between the Comedy Goddess in the box and the huge Geraldine. The banter between Dawn and Jennifer was great all evening - I just wish there had been more of them just being themselves.

I was very sad to see the show end and had a tear in my eye at the end. A great send-off to the best female comics ever. x

kel mcm:

Hi there. Firstly I wanna say I think that you's are both great (real idols). I went to see your show in Newcastle and thought it was fannnnnnnnnntassssticcccc. My friend had been on a previous occision and managed to get a photograph with you's as you's were leaving, so because we were big fans and new you were coming back for 1 last nite on the sat, we decided to wait to try to get a photograph with you's, so me my cousin and my niece waited outside for a few hours hopeing for a photo, we had been there 1 hour when a man came up to us and told us just to go home because you's were leaving straight after the show, we were just deciding on what to do when you's both come out and in to your cars and began to drive off. I know that you's were proberbly tired after the show but it wouldnt of took that long as we were the only 3 people waiting there, we were quite dissapointed as we new it would be the last chance to see you's, as this was set to be your last tour. We have been fans of both your work since the start, however we left a little happier as we got a wave as you's drove off. sorry to moan, still think you's are great and hope that you's will continue to make us laugh in the future. luv kel x

Crazy4uamI:

I know it has been said previously - but you have to come to NYC. I promise to buy two tickets for each night you have a show. I worship the ground you both walk on so please puddle jump and come to NYC. Please...pretty please...pretty pretty please...

Joanna:

I will make yet another plea for French and Saunders fans in the US...PLEASE COME TO NYC!!! Alot of us admire you and would LOVE for you to come on over. I will personally go to all NYC dates that you schedule. XX

Bryony:

Hi!!!
I was treated to tickets to your show for my birthday yesterday and was driven down to Brighton from Bromley to see you! it was the best birthday ever! i can honestly say i have never laughed so much in all my life!! Thank you so much for making my birthday such a fab one!!
Bryony x

Laura M. Oliphant:

I just want to add another plea for you to cross the pond.
A NYC show would be incredible. We get up there all the time to see shows....
Please...!

M.:

Drove down to Brighton in pissing rain last night full of excitement and huge expectations. I had been so looking forward to seeing F&S. However, the show was awful and I found myself constantly looking at my watch, counting down the minutes to leave the Brighton Centre. It just seemed no thought had been put into this farewell tour, as if they'd rushed it at the very last minute. It wasn't funny and I just felt sorry for them for ending their joint career like this, and for me, for wasting my evening. London dates? I seriously wouldn't bother. On top of this, half the audience couldn't see the whole stage, let alone the screen at the back of it - too many seats with very little visibility had been sold - a total rip off, really. Anyay, all in all, a very disappointing night. Had I known, I would've rather stayed in and watched 'The Apprentice'. What a shame.

Val Spence:

Please, please think about touring further north. When you are appearing in Harrogate in April I am unfortunately away camping with the Scouts (yes - I'm sure there's a joke there somewhere!). North could be anywhere eg Newcastle, Sunderland, Hull, York, Pocklington (we get Midge Ure there so why not French and Saunders who have been the thinking women's mainstay since the '80's - yes - I was there). Hey girls - your farewell tour could last longer than JFK's presidency (another joke?)

Thanks for everything over the years - loved it all - better than marriage - sometimes!!

Alison:

Saw your show in Brighton and laughed all night. Thought it was a really good mix using video and live. My highlights were Madonna and Dawn's amazing graphic monologue at the bus stop. Well done to you both and congratulations on your work together for the past twenty years.

Pammy A:

Me, my mum and sisters seen the Glasgow show on the 18th march, we each had our own fav sketch, and we were not let down! Superb performance! Dawn and Jennifer... what can i say... ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!! Cheers! thanks alot!!!

Suzie Byrne:

As much as I would love you to come to AUSTRALIA I know you can't, and I don't blame you, as they tend to snaffle up superstars like yourselves and make them do cameos in either Neighbours or Home and Away, poor Michael Palin is still recovering from that one!

So I will await eagerly for the show to be released on DVD and I will watch it in the honorable, respectful manner it deserves by wrapping my couch in bubblewrap, and donning a character turban.

A Huge Thanks for all the joy your work has given me over the years! And a special thanks for not ever murdering the Australian accent, I swear you two are about the only ones in show biz who can do a proper one!

Jacqui:

I have just got home from seeing you in Ipswich, you were just fab, there were times when I just couldn't stop laughing, I went with my husband and best mate and we all thought you were just fantastic!
Lots of love and luck x

Pip:

The standing ovation from the audience at the Ipswich Regent last night said it all. It was a brilliant and hysterical show. Would pay to see it again, and will do if it goes to London. I don't understand why people are saying that there was too much video?! It was all in context, very funny, and can't have been more than 1/5th of the total time on stage!! It's still F & S! Loved Thank you for the music at the end, though Dawn's voice was obviously feeling the strains of a month on tour!

Hilarious.

going on the 11th of april in wales mellenium centre and i cant wait
i love you both but im a massive & i mean MASSIVE fan of dawn i love you u i would love 2 meet u one day,, soon :)
ur amazin and i love the vicar of dibley ;) and french & saunders
i cant wait to see u both :D

:D:D

Steph:

Hello Lovely Ladies,
My Aunt and I are making our first trip to the UK in May; the major draw, your show of course! We can't wait to see you in Oxford on the fifth; I'm sure that the experience will be well worth the trip from New York.
As a representative of the U.S., I'd like to thank you for making a mockery of our completely pretentious and shallow society. I love to see your take on American pop-culture, as you have a knack for expressing exactly those thoughts which many of us, on this side of the pond, feel. We have to be able to laugh at ourselves and you make it easy. Your jokes make life in these stressful and uncertain times a bit easier to stomach.
I know that you're not particularly comfortable with "thank you's" (Dawn) but I had to say it.
You Rock!!!!

emma:

hi please please please come to london so i can see you both.xx

Linda Taverner Brown:

2 April 2008
Dear Dawn and Jennifer,
Saw your show at the Pavillions-Py last evening with my daughter, what a great evening,(laughed so much- think I've reached the Tena stage!!)
It's good to see home grown talent back in Plymouth and with references to local places and accents.
All the very best to you both for the future, (I can think of worst places to hang out n die!!)

Matthew Tang:

Dear Jennifer & Dawn,
Thanks for so many amazing years of great comedy that has kept me laughing for hours & hours, not to mention years, you really are both incredibly talented women!!
I just wish you'd both come to Australia for a show or two, you could have an awesome holiday too, I'm sure you & your families would all love it.
I'd so love to see you do this show in Australia, is there a way to get you down here soon?
Hope life is as good as you want it to be !
Lots of love & laughter,
Matt - Sydney, Australia

Laura W:

Just seen the show tonight at the Plymouth Pavilions and my cheeks are aching from laughing. The show was fantastic and just proves why French and Saunders are so popular. It was extremely funny and the duo related very well to the audience. It was everything and more than I expected, just really sad that you guys are stopping French and Saunders. Well done and thank you for the brilliant show it was simply absolutely fabulous!

KJC:

I took my partner to see F&S at Brighton and we both had a terrific time. I did notice that some peoples' view was obstructed but is that really Dawn and Jennifers fault?? I'm not sure where that person was who clock watched all night, but I think if they would have preferred to watch the Apprentice, all I can say is that they should be FIRED! Maybe you should get tickets for another show (I'm off to see them again in Oxford).
Jennifer and Dawn were great, Jennifer as Madonna made me laugh so much and when Dawn searched for chocolate well! We both had a great time, as did those who sat around us, Thankyou for the laughter...I'll be in the queue to by the dvd xxx

Please, please think about touring further west.
(Much further west, i.e. San Francisco, where I now live as an ex-pat).
I saw you live at Sheffield Poly in 1981(ish?)with The Young Ones and you were the funniest live (or recorded) performance I have ever seen. Ever. I almost fell out of my seat laughing. You know you have a big following here (SF).
Now I live in Amurca, but I can still rent the dvds, dammit.
Not many people realise how hard it is to become the character you are playing and make it look natural. It's fuck**g hard! I love Jennifer's "Barbara" character who is moving to Indonesia (I just watched a 2004 dvd), and Dawn's Catherine Zeta Jones. Your acting is brilliant.
I know you'll sell out if you come here! Er, what I mean is, all the tickets would be sold and everyone would love you.

Jane Williams:

Saw F&S in Sheffield last week. Thought show was well written and clever, making fun of their success. Enjoyed some old favourite sketches, loved the mobility scooters. It was hard to sit through and not join in with the lines at times. I think the others around me would have been glad about that. Bought the 6 DVD set straight after and am loving returning to the beginning. Oh Madonna, why did you never join them!!!!
F&S are an acquired taste in comedy I think, however real fans who appreciate them will enjoy this tour as a farewell to great british comedy.
Thanks ladies and I will look out for you in the future.

Please, please , please come to San Francisco too!! We love, love , love you both so much..

Liz

Shibalvr in Santa Clara

Lyn:

Saw F&S in Nottingham last night and really enjoyed it - the Royal Concert Hall was packed and seemed liked everyone had a good time - I haven't had a good laugh like that in ages.

The Chocolate Hunt was great and Jennifer as Madonna, Dawn as CZJ, all a triumph.
Thanks for a fab night.

jodie:

just wanted to say goodluck for tonight i cant wait to see u both performing i think i might book to go again in may anyways break a leg as they say !!! :)

trisha:

Thank you for a wonderful show in Plymouth. We loved seeing you in person. It was also wonderful to be with so many others who appreciate your work as a pair. In the US it is not difficult to find a gay man who knows Absolutely Fabulous or an intellectual who knows the Vicar (The show plays on our educational programming station) but not many know of your work together. We also loved seeing the countryside which we may not have done if you had scheduled dates for London...We left Minnesota in a snowstorm and found spring abloom, complete with little lambs and bunnies on the hillsides, on our journey to Plymouth. Thank you for your work. As a woman who had formerly known British comedy only in the likes of Benny Hill, I don't think it an exageration to declare that you two have redeemed a nation!
Sincerely, Trisha St.Paul MN

Svenn Rudow:

I flew up to Nottingham from Palma de Mallorca to see my life -savers, and it was worth every penny and minute spent! These girls are the best, together as French and Saunders, or in separate shows. I hope to see them soon again. If they do a London show, I might actually go again. Thank you ever so much Dawn and Jennifer for beeing there through Ab Fab, Wild West, The Vicar for me when I need it the most. From a Norwegian living in Spain!

Crazy4uamI:

OK - you haven't decided to come to the US yet so I guess I am going to you. I may be crazy spending a fortune to see you both but I am soooooo excited. Can't wait to see you in Oxford. I'll be the one with the crazy accent screaming in the balcony.

Jean:

Just wanted to say haven't laughed so much in a long, long time. Absolutely fabulous show last night in Bournemouth. Thank you so much for all the laughter, what a gift! Only got to come to see you as someone missed out by being in hospital, sad for them but hey I had a great time.
P.S. They have made a full recovery and are coming to the extra show at the BIC in May.

People, people, when will you realise when you pay to go to a show, you pay to go to a show. Not to be given a personal one-to-one experience with the show's participants once they've done their job and are attempting to get home to their families.

Genuine entertainers are about the experience they provide ON stage, etc. They didn't sign up to pander to your approval OFF stage every moment of every day. Would you succumb to every photo and autograph request every cocking day of your life? Do you like the idea of having camera phones wedgied in your face as a complete stranger grabs you by the arm? Not.

Besides Dawn and Jen said they'll only stop and sign autographs if I'm there. And I wasn't, see?

(D/J: was that OK? If so, please send the signed photos to my home address. That'd be grand, thanks.)
